SS Manchester Engineer
The attachment shows "Manchester Engineer" in a sinking condition on 27 March 1916
off the Wexford coast after being hit by a single torpedo fired by U-44 ( Paul Wagenfuhr).
She is under tow by the Admiralty Trawlers HMS "Heron" & "Margate" who are about to relinquish the tow
and hand over to the sloop HMS "Lavender" from where this photo was taken
later joined by the sloop HMS "Laburnum" in the tow,
She stayed afloat for about nine hours before sinking.
The picture you display on the site was from the commissioned painting of this vessel.
The painting was a family tribute, as it was Robert Smith (my wife's Grandfather) who was Captain
at the time of her sinking.
All the warships involved were based at Queenstown (Cobh) at the time.
'Engineer' was nearing the end of a voyage from Philadelphia - Liverpool with vital war supplies.
Ray Lloyd.

I am looking for more photographs which are of a simliar interest.
